Ryan Honl, a commissioned Army officer who led a parachute infantry platoon during Desert Storm in 1991 and later received the Liberation of Kuwait Medal, has worked successfully for nearly 10 years in the field of ophthalmic pharmaceutical sales.

Ryan Honl currently serves as District Sales Manager in charge of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals for contact lens supplier Vistakon Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. Since 2004, Ryan Honl has overseen 10 sales representatives who cover 14 states. During this time, Ryan Honl’s district has been honored by Vistakon for holding highest overall sales in ’05, out of six in the nation. In ’06, Ryan Honl received the Johnson & Johnson Global Standards of Leadership Award. He has consistently earned glowing annual review ratings over the past three years, and has successfully coached numerous employees to greater responsibilities.

Prior to Vistakon, Ryan Honl worked from ’03 to ’04 as District Sales Manager in charge of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals for Santen, Inc. At this point in his career, his responsibilities included managing a team of nine sales reps. Ryan Honl’s achievements with Santen include hitting a 115% sales quota and completing a REACH management course. Ryan Honl made the shift to Vistakon when Santen was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in ’04.

Ryan Honl worked his way up the ranks at Santen with two previous positions. In ’02, he was named Sales Training Manager in the ophthalmic pharmaceuticals division. Working under the Director of Sales Training, Ryan Honl assisted in training 64 members of Santen’s national sales force.

Ryan Honl first joined Santen as a Specialty Pharmaceutical Sales Representative, a position he held from ’00 to ’02. As sales rep, Ryan Honl managed approximately 200 accounts. The work involved building relationships with ophthalmologists to improve territory market share. During this time, Ryan Honl was honored as Sales Representative of the Quarter for the Southeast Region during two consecutive quarters in ’01, and for achieving the highest market share in the sales force for a key Santen product during one quarter in ’02.

Ryan Honl began his career in this field when he took a position as Pharmaceutical Sales Representative for Warner Chilcott, a supplier of women’s healthcare and dermatology pharmaceuticals, from ’99 to ’00. Placed in charge of nearly 200 accounts involving relationship-building with doctors of women’s health, urology, and cardiology, Ryan Honl managed to move an underperforming territory to within the top 50% of market share within six months of joining the firm.

Ryan Honl spent nearly 10 years serving with the U.S. Army. He enlisted directly out of high school, and at the age of 18, found himself participating in Desert Shield/Storm in the Corps of Engineers serving in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. He distinguished himself sufficiently that he was appointed by Secretary of Defense to attend West Point Military Academy from the enlisted ranks. During his time with the Army, Ryan Honl completed a course in French at the French Defense Department Language School for foreign officers at Rochefort Sur Mer, France, and studied at the French Military Academy for one semester.

In this free time, Ryan Honl practices judo, volunteers at a local homeless shelter and teaches Sunday school classes. A dog lover, he is a fan of German shepherds and huskies. He also enjoys reading history books when time permits. He resides in Valparaiso, Ind., with his wife and two daughters.
